One
of the long standing traditions in the Catholic Church is to
worship Jesus at prescribed times other than at Mass, in a
practice known as Exposition of the Holy Eucharist. The
consecrated host is placed in an ornate stand known as a
monstrance. This stand is made of precious metal and has a
window to expose the white host, thus the word Exposition.
The purpose is to allow adequate time to worship God in His
presence on the altar in the monstrance, without being hurried,
so as to draw closer to Him.
At
the end of a set period of time, the priest or deacon blesses
those attending by making the sign of the cross with the
monstrance containing the sacred host. The people are
blessed by Jesus Himself. This is known as Benediction.
Immaculate
Conception parish conducts Exposition and Benediction on the
first Sunday of every month at 7:00 pm in the church, lead by
Deacon Maury Hall. Exposition without benediction is held
in the chapel every Monday and Tuesday afternoon.
